چکیده

Pre-congestion notification (PCN) marks packets when the PCN traffic rate exceeds an admissible link rate and this marking information is used as feedback from the network to take admission decisions for new flows. This idea is currently under standardization in the IETF. Different marking algorithms are discussed and various admission control (AC) algorithms are proposed that decide based on the packet markings whether further flows should be accepted or blocked. In this paper, we investigate the applicability of PCN-based AC under challenging conditions and show the limitations of different marking and AC algorithms.

Threshold configuration and routing optimization for PCN-based resilient admission control

Pre-congestion notification (PCN) in IP networks uses packet metering and marking within a PCN domain to notify its egress nodes whether link-specific admissible or supportable rate thresholds have been exceeded by high priority traffic. Based on this information simple admission control and flow termination is implemented. The latter is a new flow control function and useful in case of overloa...

Preliminary Performance Evaluation of Admission Control in Load Control Pre-Congestion Notification (LC-PCN)

The Differentiated Service (DS) framework has been developed by the Internet Engineering Taskforce (IETF) to provide Quality of Service (QoS) on the Internet. Load Control Pre-Congestion Notification (LC-PCN) is a measurement based DiffServ implementation that uses Admission Control and Flow Termination to control the load in a domain. In this paper a preliminary performance evaluation of Admis...

PCN-based marked flow termination

Pre-congestion notification (PCN) uses packet metering and marking to notify network boundaries when the current traffic load on some links of a PCN domain exceeds their configured admissible or supportable rates. This feedback is used for PCN-based admission control and flow termination within single PCN domains (edge-to-edge PCN). While admission control is rather well understood, flow termin...

PCN-based measured rate termination

Overload in a packet-based network can be prevented by admitting or blocking new flows depending on its load conditions. However, overload can occur in spite of admission control due to unforseen events, e.g., when admitted traffic is rerouted in the network after a failure. To restore quality of service for the majority of admitted flows in such cases, flow termination has been proposed as a n...

Flow termination signaling in the centralized pre-congestion notification architecture

Pre-congestion notification (PCN) protects inelastic traffic by using feedback on network link loads on and acting upon this accordingly. These actions comprise to admission control and termination of flows. Two PCN architectures have been defined by IETF: the centralized and decentralized PCN architecture. The decentralized PCN architecture has received much attention in the literature whereas...
